Recital by Andrea Casarrubios at the Church of Leiguarda
In this evening of the ADAR Festival 2025, cellist and composer Andrea Casarrubios starred in a recital at the Church of Leiguarda. Trained between Spain and the United States and recently nominated for a Grammy for her work SEVEN, Casarrubios offered a proposal that united interpretive virtuosity and a deeply personal compositional voice.
The programme spanned more than two centuries of music. It opened with two sonatas by Luigi Boccherini, an essential figure of Classicism who developed much of his career in Spain. Next, the piano took centre stage with the impressionist delicacy of Claude Debussy, setting up an especially intimate central section with three works by Casarrubios herself (2018-2023), in which memory, folklore and emotion conversed in a language all her own.
The second part included Brown Leaves Moving by Guillermo Laporta, a piece that interwove improvisation and composition in an open format. Casarrubios then performed SEVEN, composed in tribute to the victims of the pandemic. The recital closed with a section of Dvořák's Dumky Trio, in which melancholy and folk energy coexisted within a free and deeply expressive structure.
